Do You Need a Fence or a Railing, or Is There a Difference?
Do You Need a Fence or a Railing, or Is There a Difference?
We inform you as a metalworking master company! The terms “railing” and “fence” often cause confusion. One might wonder, is there a difference?
We explain when to use a fence or a railing.
When do I use a fence?
Fences are used for property boundaries and are not subject to safety-related building regulations.
There are no specific requirements for geometry and statics.
A metal fence can be custom-made and can have various openings and heights depending on needs.
When do I need a railing?
The most important thing: If the fall height is greater than 1 meter, I need a railing!
Fences are not permissible in this case. Even if only a drop edge is present, we strongly recommend installing a railing.
A railing primarily serves to prevent falls. Safety comes first, which is why there are various regulations and recommendations.
Here are the most important guidelines summarized:
Load capacity:
A railing in private areas must be able to evenly distribute 120 kg per meter on the handrail. There are no specific requirements for fences.
Deflection:
With a load of 80 kg per meter, a railing must not have a deflection greater than 3 cm. There are no requirements for fences in this regard.
Openings:
Railings must not allow a ball with a diameter of more than 120 mm to pass through. Fences, on the other hand, can have different openings depending on the need.
Use a Garden Fence as a Railing!
Often, both a property boundary and garden wall are needed!
We can handle both. Many of our fences are made according to railing regulations and can therefore be used as both a railing and a fence.
This way, you don’t need to switch systems, and visually it looks clean and consistent!
